Extraction and drying

Water extraction and drying in Missouri City

Removing the standing water is the first half. The second half is drying the material you cannot see, and that is where readings matter more than looks.

Say the street address first. Calling soon after a loss helps.

Extraction comes first

Pumps handle deep water. Wet vacuums and extraction wands lift what is left from carpet, pad and hard floors.

Water that sits under laminate or in a wall cavity is not visible from the room. A moisture meter, and sometimes a thermal camera, shows where it went.

  • Pumping or vacuuming standing water.
  • Lifting wet carpet and pad when the water was dirty.
  • Pulling baseboards so air reaches the wall cavity.
  • Cutting a flood cut in drywall if water wicked up the board.

How structural drying works

Air movers push dry air across wet surfaces. Dehumidifiers pull the moisture out of the air so the surfaces keep releasing it.

The two work together in a closed room. Opening windows during a humid Gulf Coast week can slow the process rather than speed it.

Equipment stays until daily readings stop falling and match a dry reference point the contractor takes from an unaffected wall.

What gets measured

Readings a contractor may record
ReadingWhy it is taken
Moisture content in drywall and woodShows whether a surface is still holding water.
Room temperature and humidityTells the contractor if the dehumidifiers are keeping up.
A dry reference readingGives a target for what normal looks like in your house.
Daily logsCreate a record you can pass to an insurer.

What the homeowner can do

Keep the thermostat steady and leave the equipment running. Do not unplug a unit to charge a phone.

Move small items out of the wet room. Leave heavy furniture where it is unless the contractor asks you to move it.

If a smell of dampness lingers after several days, tell the contractor. Hidden pockets sometimes stay wet behind cabinets.

Water is still moving. Call about it now.

Describe what happened, give the street address, and the call is routed to an independent restoration contractor.
