How to document water damage for a claim

A clear record shortens arguments later. It costs nothing but a phone and a notebook.

What to capture

  1. Wide shots

Photograph each affected room from the doorway, then from two corners.

  2. Close-ups

Show the source, the water line on walls, stains on ceilings and ruined items.

  3. Video

Walk through the house slowly and say the date and room names aloud.

  4. Lists

Write down damaged items with age and where each was bought, if you remember.

  5. Receipts

Keep every bill for temporary repairs, equipment and lodging.

What Texas Department of Insurance advises

TDI says to take pictures and video of the damage and not to throw anything away until the insurance adjuster says so.

It also advises temporary repairs only and keeping a list of repairs with receipts. It says to try to be there when the adjuster visits and to point out all damage.

It suggests getting multiple bids from contractors and comparing them with the adjuster's report before settling the claim.

Keep a call log

TDI recommends keeping a record of everyone you spoke with at the insurance company. Write the date, the name and what was said.

Do the same with any contractor: who called, what was promised and what was put in writing.

Proof of the deductible

TDI says the insurer can ask for proof that you paid your deductible. A receipt, canceled check or card statement works.

Save that proof together with the estimate and invoice.

Water is still moving. Call about it now.

Describe what happened, give the street address, and the call is routed to an independent restoration contractor.
